YOWAH OPAL
can only be found at Yowah in an area of approx. 1 sq. mile in
the harsh outback of Queensland, Australia. There, millions of years
ago, silica solution was trapped within an ironstone concretion and time
created colors of rare brilliance and beauty.
Thousands of “Nuts” are
found, only a few are blessed with precious opal.
Those are cut with great care, dedication and with regards to
their individual character. No two stones are
the same.
Known as the biggest and
most valuable picture opal in the world, the
“Angel” weighs 1,280 carats and has quite clearly outlined a
remarkable likeness to an angel, complete with wings. It was mined in
1974 by Adolf Barfuss
(see Lapidary Journal June 1986).
The method of mining is
by opencut as well as by pick and shovel. This is hard back-breaking
work and requires a lot of luck. As we are selling directly from our own
mines we can offer you opals at very competitive prices and of high
quality. We also stock a wide and varied range
of specimens. |
